Top Ten Tuesday!

Yes, I know it's Wednesday!  However, I had no time to post yesterday and this is such a good topic that I will do it today.

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers answers. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND sign Mister Linky at the bottom to share with us and all those who are participating. If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Don't worry if you can't come up with ten every time..just post what you can!

MY TOP TEN FAV HEROINES!

1.  Alanna the Lioness (Tamora Pierce)- I love Alanna because she's a lot like me only a knight.  The first female knight of Tortall in like forever.  Alanna has red hair, a violent temper, loves cats, fears water, hates cold, is very small, and struggles with the duplicity of being feminine versus masculine.  Eventually she works it out for herself.  Great role model for young girls!

2.  Cathy from Wuthering Heights- I'm not sure if Cathy can be considered a heroine, but I LOVE HER.  She is also, unfortunately, a lot like me- extremely passionate.  If I lived in the olden days, I'm quite sure that I would have died from passion just like her.  Plus my fav quote- "Nelly, I am Heathcliff!".  Just trust me.  I love her.

3.  Here's another UNPOPULAR one- Bella Swan.  I'm not ashamed to say it, but I think she's excellent.  I think that she actually is very relatable to lots of high school girls- NOT a good role model, but relatable.  She loses her voice (the psych term, not her physical voice).  She suffers from depression- yes, over a guy.  She feels an external locus of control- nothing that she does can possibly affect her life for the better.  She shuts down because of these things, just like girls with mood disorders, sometimes anorexia, etc. AND THEN IN Breaking Dawn, some things happen that allow her to FIND WHO SHE IS and she actually becomes quite powerful.  Feeling powerless is a huge problem for teen girls, and this series deals with that (possibly inadvertently).

4.  Hermione- need I say more?  She's smart, brave, and independent.  I don't think anyone will disagree with me here :D  Plus there's the whole Snape thing that my BFFL used to be obsessed with.

5.  Rebecca Bloomwood (Shopaholic)- I have already confessed my adoration of S. Kinsella, and I adore Rebecca Bloomwood.  She's funny, smart and ditzy back and forth, and generally has a positive outlook.  Plus, she coined the line "She's a red haired bitch and I hate her" which I love.  I'd like one of those T-shirts please, but mine should currently say- "She's a 17 yr old bitch and I hate her".  No comment.

6.  Jane Eyre- mmmhmmm.  Kind of boring.  Kind of weird.  But still very interesting.

7.  Christy Miller and her BFFL Katie...(Robin Jones Gunn)-  If you've read these books, you know what I'm talking about.  These girls are very good role models.  They make mistakes, fix them, and generally are unique and cute (in behavior, not necessarily appearance).

8.  Katniss from the Hunger Games- I've already hashed this one out enough.

9.  Keladry of Mindelan (Tamora Pierce)- unlike possibly all of T. Pierce's other heroines, Keladry has absolutely no personal magic powers- she just works hard.

10.  The Other Boylen Girl- see, I don't remember her name off of the top of my head!  I greatly admired her though, for seeking her own life in a time when that really wasn't an acceptable thing to do.

  1. Oooh, I love your picks! I've actually read most of the books on your list and I'm (pleasantly) surprised to have come across another reader of the Christy Miller series. Those books were my first taste of teen literature. I wouldn't say she was one of my top heroines but I see what you're saying. :D

I totally agree with you with Hermione and Katniss! They're such potent mixes of smart, independent and strong. :)

And Jane Eyre... I agree with you that she was interesting and a bit strange. But then who isn't? I appreciate how she spoke her mind and didn't let that boarding school experience break her spirit. I don't really remember the specifics of what happened, but she definitely wasn't ordinary.

And I like your blog! It's a very nice layout. :D After looking at your book montage, all I can ask you is, "Have you read every Tamora Pierce book out there?". :)

  2. Great choices-- you make a good argument for Bella and I have to agree with you/ One thing no one can deny is she knows want she wants and who she wants to be. The world and (otherworldly) just kept getting in her way.

  5. Your list is completely different from mine. I like that.

I'm reading Mockingjay right now and it is the character of Katniss that intrigues me. Her character has changed so much from what she was in Hunger Games.
